Maersk Line launches Middle East-West Africa route (28-01-2010)

Maersk Line has launched a direct Middle East–West Africa (MEW1) service, offering weekly departures from Jebel Ali into the West African main ports of Abidjan, Tema & Apapa. The service, which will commence next month, has been introduced to reduce transit times by 5–7 days compared to the current schedule, according to Lars Nielsen, managing director of Maersk Line in the UAE, Qatar and Oman.
“We believe that this direct service, complemented by our dedicated Africa desk in Dubai with its extended working hours will offer our customers an outstanding product into West Africa.” said Nielsen.
"The service will be operated using nine vessels with a capacity of 2,500 Twenty foot equivalent units containers. As a result we are not adding capacity to the network, but rather finding a direct/faster solution for our clients shipping from Dubai to West Africa."
The new rotation of the MEW1 service will be : Pipavav (India) – Jawaharlal Nehru (India) – Jebel Ali Dubai (U.A.E) – Algeciras (Spain) – Abidjan (Ivory Coast) – Tema (Ghana) – Apapa (Nigeria) – Salalah (Oman) - Pipavav (India).
